Originally developed and issued for mechanics, the AAF "Type A-1 Sweater" was also known to be favored by pilots and aircrews due to its high heat retention and comfort. Knitted from long-pile worsted wool, it is not difficult to imagine how this sweater protected the many mechanics working on the European front in winter and the aircrews risking their lives in the fight against incoming German fighter planes from the bitter cold.
